About Novate Legal

Novate Legal is a solo law firm in Toronto that combines business law with Canadian immigration services for entrepreneurs and companies moving into the country. Emily Lukaweski founded the firm in January 2019, on the idea that business and immigration issues are often intertwined for a growing company or a newcomer employer, and can be handled by one lawyer instead of two. The practice covers incorporations, buying and selling a business, shareholder and partnership agreements, and hiring, together with permanent resident, work, study, and visitor visa applications and family sponsorship. Novate Legal works on a flat fee or fixed estimate basis, so clients know the cost of a matter before it starts.

Before opening the firm, Lukaweski spent about three years working in Newfoundland and Labrador, first with the provincial government and then in private practice, on corporate, immigration, and intellectual property files for clients ranging from startups to multinational companies. Lukaweski then returned to Toronto and worked as virtual in-house counsel for small and medium businesses and other law firms before starting Novate Legal. The firm's office is on King Street East in downtown Toronto.
