Marks & Clerk is an international intellectual property firm that traces its history to 1887, when it set up its first office in the UK. It has grown into a network of offices across the United Kingdom, continental Europe, Asia, and North America. In 2007 the firm's China practice, founded in 1994 as Lloyd Wise, merged into the Marks & Clerk network, extending its reach into East Asia.
The firm's Canadian practice dates to 1921, giving it more than a century of continuous operation in the country. It works from two offices, in Ottawa and Toronto, with about 25 lawyers and patent and trademark agents supported by more than 50 additional staff. The Toronto office, at 33 Yonge Street in the city's financial and legal district, handles patent prosecution, trademark and copyright work, and IP litigation. Its patent agents draw on technical backgrounds in electronics, computer science, artificial intelligence, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology, and the office also acts for clients in fashion, entertainment, and consumer goods.

By appointmentThe Toronto office is at 33 Yonge Street, Suite 300, in the heart of the city's financial and legal district, close to the courts. That's a fitting location for a practice whose Canadian work includes IP litigation.
The building at that address went up in 1982 on the corner of Yonge and Front Streets, replacing the six storey Toronto Board of Trade Building that had stood there since 1892, one of the city's earliest skyscrapers. The block sits at the southern edge of the Financial District, in a stretch of downtown that has been home to the city's business and trade institutions for well over a century.
