About Makari Law

Makari Law is a Toronto family law firm founded by Joseph Makari, who has practiced exclusively in family law since being called to the Ontario Bar in 2017. Makari studied criminology at York University, graduating on the Dean's Honour List, and went on to earn a law degree from the University of Ottawa in 2016. During law school, Makari worked in the family law division of the University of Ottawa's Community Legal Clinic.

Before founding the firm, Makari spent four years at a family law firm in midtown Toronto. Makari Law's practice now covers divorce and separation, property division, child and spousal support, parenting time and decision making responsibility, parenting plans and schedules, grandparents' rights, and section 7 expenses tied to a child's special needs. Makari has also completed Collaborative Practice Training in Toronto and describes the approach as settlement oriented, encouraging negotiation and mediation over litigation while still appearing in family courts across the Greater Toronto Area when a case needs to go before a judge.

Who handles what

The neighbourhood

Makari Law's office is at 130 Queens Quay East, inside the Daniels Waterfront development in Toronto. The same building houses George Brown College's School of Design, part of a wider shift in that stretch of the harbour from industrial land into a mixed use community of offices, condos, and cultural space.

Because family law cases are heard across the region rather than in one local courthouse, Makari has appeared in family courts throughout the Greater Toronto Area rather than working out of a single downtown docket.
