JMJ Workplace Investigation Law LLP is a Toronto based law firm that has practiced exclusively in workplace investigations since it opened in early 2013. That focus made it one of the first law firms in Canada built entirely around impartial workplace investigations, rather than employment litigation or advice generally. Partners Jennifer MacKenzie and Monica Jeffrey bring more than fifty years of combined employment law and human resources experience to the practice, and both completed certification through the Association of Workplace Investigators (AWI) Training Institute in 2013.
MacKenzie practiced employment law at a small Toronto firm for nearly twenty years before co-founding JMJ, and holds an undergraduate degree in psychology. MacKenzie also co-authored two employment law books, Mediating Employment Disputes and the Human Resources Guide to Managing Workplace Harassment. Jeffrey was called to the bar in 2003 after articling at a national law firm and the Ontario Labour Relations Board, then practiced workplace law for close to a decade before co-founding JMJ. Jeffrey later served as Immediate Past President of AWI's Board of Directors and continues to teach and evaluate for AWI's Training Institute.
The firm investigates workplace harassment, discrimination, violence, and misconduct complaints for employers, in both unionized and non-unionized workplaces, and also conducts broader workplace culture reviews. Its work centers on staying impartial and at arm's length. JMJ has offices in Toronto and Richmond Hill.
JMJ's Toronto office is at 140 Yonge Street, inside the Dineen Building, a heritage designated structure built in 1897 for the W. and F. Dineen Company, a hat and fur manufacturer whose showroom and workshop once occupied the site. A 2012 renovation turned the building into a mixed use property, and its ground floor now houses the Dineen Coffee Co. The office sits at the corner of Yonge and Temperance, in the middle of Toronto's downtown business core, close to the kind of employers the firm's investigations serve.
JMJ also keeps an office in Richmond Hill, at 9225 Leslie Street, giving the firm a second point of contact for organizations in York Region without a separate downtown presence there.
