About JM Law

JM Law is a small family law practice on St. Clair Avenue West in midtown Toronto, run by Jacqueline M. Mills, a certified specialist in family law who has practised exclusively in the field since 1986. Mills earned a B.A. in economics from Queen's University in 1979 and an LL.B. from Queen's in 1984, graduating with two academic awards and a placement with the Law Reform Commission of Canada. Mills worked as an associate and then a partner at Lang Michener, later merged into McMillan LLP, for fourteen years before forming the partnership Doran & Mills in 1998, then continued as a sole practitioner from 2006 on, after partner Burke Doran retired.

Mills is a Certified Specialist in Family Law, an appointed Dispute Resolution Officer at the Superior Court of Justice, and a Fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Elise Visco, an associate lawyer who is collaboratively certified, works alongside Mills. The practice handles cohabitation and marriage agreements, separation, divorce, parenting and support matters, and family arbitration, through negotiation, mediation, and litigation at every level of Ontario's courts.

The neighbourhood

JM Law's office is in a building at 45 St. Clair Avenue West that went up in 1968, designed by the architecture firm Clifford & Lawrie, in what's now Toronto's Yonge and St. Clair district. The area is a stretch of midtown offices rather than a courthouse block, which fits a practice that resolves most files by negotiation, mediation, or arbitration and meets clients by appointment, including virtually, rather than around a courtroom calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Does JM Law represent same-sex couples and other non-traditional families?
Yes. The firm's position is that a couple is a couple and a family is a family regardless of makeup, and it lists both opposite-sex and same-sex clients among those it has served.
What does an initial consultation with JM Law cost?
Consultations with Jacqueline Mills are billed at $575 an hour. Associate lawyer Elise Visco will often sit in on an initial meeting, and that time isn't billed.
Can JM Law resolve my separation without going to court?
Often, yes. The firm works through negotiation, mediation, and arbitration as well as litigation, and Jacqueline Mills offers family arbitration specifically to help limit the time, cost, and stress of a courtroom process.
Does JM Law offer collaborative family law?
In a limited way. Associate lawyer Elise Visco is collaboratively certified, and the firm has worked on informal collaborative matters, though it isn't currently taking on formal collaborative law files.
How long has Jacqueline Mills practised family law, and where did the firm come from?
Mills has practised family law exclusively since 1986. Mills was a partner at Lang Michener for fourteen years, then co-founded Doran & Mills in 1998, and has practised as a sole practitioner since 2006.
Can I meet with JM Law virtually, or do I need to come to the office?
Both options are available. The office at 45 St. Clair Avenue West in Toronto is open by appointment, and Jacqueline Mills also offers consultations by phone or video.
