About Jackman & Associates

Jackman & Associates is an immigration and refugee law firm based in Toronto, practising in association under Barbara Jackman Professional Corporation from an office on St. Clair Avenue West. Barbara Jackman founded the practice after graduating from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 1976 and being called to the Bar of Ontario in 1978. The firm today has four lawyers who together handle immigration and refugee work spanning judicial reviews in Federal Court, sponsorship applications and appeals, refugee claims and appeals, pre-removal risk assessment applications, national security and inadmissibility matters, citizenship applications, detention reviews, and criminal rehabilitation applications.

Jackman has appeared as party or intervener in a series of Supreme Court of Canada cases, from Singh v. Canada in 1985, which extended Charter protections to refugee claimants, to Canada v. Vavilov in 2019, which reset the standard courts use to review government decisions. Along with courtroom work, Jackman has taught immigration, refugee, and Charter law as a sessional instructor at Queen's University, the University of Toronto, and Osgoode Hall Law School, and has testified before House of Commons and Senate committees on immigration law reform. Jackman was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2019 and holds honorary doctor of laws degrees from the Law Society of Upper Canada, the University of Windsor, and the University of Ottawa.
