About Gaertner Baron Professional Corporation

Gaertner Baron Professional Corporation is a litigation focused law firm on Spadina Avenue in downtown Toronto. Its practice covers corporate and commercial litigation, business law, employment law, human rights matters, real estate litigation, and wills, estates, and trusts disputes for individuals, insurers, and corporations. The firm's own site says its lawyers bring more than 50 years of combined legal experience, and it also runs a licensed paralegal practice that appears at Small Claims Court, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, and the Landlord and Tenant Board.

Founding partner Arie Gaertner earned a J.D. from the University of Toronto in 1974 and was called to the Ontario bar in 1976, after serving as the Canadian senior litigation partner of an international, full service law firm before opening the practice that became Gaertner Baron. The rest of the firm's lawyers were called to the Ontario bar across a wide span of years, from 2000 up to 2024, and between them they handle wrongful dismissal and severance, shareholder and commercial lease disputes, human rights and landlord tenant matters, and estate litigation. The firm offers clients a choice of hourly, fixed fee, or deferred fee billing arrangements, and says many of its staff can serve clients in French, German, Spanish, Lithuanian, Yiddish, Urdu, or Hindi in addition to English.

The neighbourhood

The firm's office at 119 Spadina Avenue sits in the Balfour Building, a twelve storey Art Deco tower designed by architect Benjamin Brown and built in 1930 for the Schiffer Hillman Clothing Company. The building was named for British statesman Arthur Balfour and stands opposite the similarly Art Deco Tower Building, the two of them framing Spadina Avenue at Adelaide Street West.

That corner sits at the heart of what was Toronto's garment district and is now known as the Fashion District, an area that grew up as a hub of textile and clothing manufacturing in the early twentieth century. Many of its old loft buildings have since been converted into offices and residences while a handful of textile, bead, and clothing retailers still trade nearby, a stretch of downtown that mixes its manufacturing past with present day commercial life.
