About Family Law: A La Carte

Family Law: A La Carte is a solo Toronto family law practice run by lawyer Lisa Eisen, who was called to the Ontario bar in 1995. Eisen holds an LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School (1993) and a B.A. in psychology from York University (1990). Before setting up the practice, Eisen spent time teaching negotiation and mediation skills, an experience that later shaped how the firm works with clients.

The firm's model is unbundled, or limited scope, family law service. Instead of taking on a full file, Eisen offers to handle specific pieces of a matter, such as drafting a separation or cohabitation agreement, preparing court documents, or reviewing a financial statement, while the client manages the rest. A related option is legal coaching, where Eisen guides a client who is representing themselves rather than taking the file over directly. The site describes the goal as legal help "at a price you can afford," aimed at people who can't or don't want to pay for a traditional full retainer.

Eisen also holds an Associate Certified Coach designation from the International Coaching Federation (2015) and completed a coaching certification through Adler Professional Coaching (2011). Eisen co-authored a chapter on Ontario family law for the European Lawyer Reference, second edition, published in 2013.
