ezDivorce.ca is a Toronto based legal practice run by Adam Slater, a lawyer who has been licensed in Ontario since 1999. Slater founded the practice in 2003 to focus on one narrow slice of family law: simple, uncontested and joint divorces under Ontario law, plus the separation agreements that often go along with them. Before starting the practice, Slater worked as an assistant district attorney in Pittsburgh, then as an associate in structured finance and securitization law at McCarthy Tetrault in Toronto, working on debt and asset deals for major Canadian banks.
The practice doesn't take on cases involving child custody, support, or property division, only divorces where ending the marriage is the sole issue before the court. Clients fill out an online intake form, sign the required court documents digitally, and swear the final affidavit over video call rather than in front of a notary or in a courthouse. - Does ezDivorce.ca handle custody, support, or property issues along with the divorce?
- No. The practice only handles simple, uncontested or joint divorces where ending the marriage is the sole issue asked of the court. Cases involving child custody, spousal or child support, or dividing property aren't part of what it offers.
- Will I have to go to court or stand in front of a judge?
- No court appearance is needed in a normal case. Once the paperwork is filed and served, a judge reviews it on the written record, and you only need to appear if your spouse contests the divorce.
- Can ezDivorce.ca still help if my spouse lives outside Ontario or outside Canada?
- Yes, as long as you or your spouse has lived in Ontario for at least a year before applying. Serving a spouse who lives abroad, including under the Hague Convention, is available for an added fee.
- How much does an ezDivorce.ca divorce cost in total?
- The base service starts at $575 plus HST, on top of mandatory Ontario court filing fees of $669 (as low as $10 with a court fee waiver), which typically works out to about $1,318.75 including tax for a straightforward case.
- How long does the process usually take?
- Most simple divorces take about three to six months from filing to the final order, depending on the court and how complete the paperwork is when it's filed.
- Can ezDivorce.ca also prepare a separation agreement, not just the divorce?
- Yes. A basic separation agreement starts at $335 when it's added to a divorce package, or can be prepared on its own.
