About Downey Law

Downey Law is a small family law practice in Toronto's Beach neighbourhood, run by lawyer Briar Downey from an office on Kingston Road. The practice launched in 2019, after time at a downtown Toronto firm and work as counsel to children's aid societies on child protection matters. The firm describes two decades of experience in family law and more than 2,500 hours spent in family court, a background that now informs an approach built around keeping cases out of court where possible.

Downey Law handles divorce and separation, marriage contracts and cohabitation agreements, support and property division, parenting plans, and limited scope (unbundled) services for clients who only need help with part of a case. Rather than exchanging formal letters with opposing counsel, the practice favours direct phone calls to head off escalation, working through collaborative practice, joint neutral consultation, or mediation before considering litigation. Downey Law is a member of Collaborative Divorce Toronto and is listed in the Legal Aid Ontario lawyer directory under the family and child protection specialty tags. The office offers video conferencing, early morning or after hours appointments by request, and free parking behind the building.
