About DeGroot Law

DeGroot Law is a Toronto based solo practice that handles family law exclusively, run by lawyer Mark DeGroot. Mark started out at a large national law firm working mainly on family law files, then moved to a small family law firm in downtown Toronto to build experience with both straightforward separations and high conflict cases. That work included hearings at every level of Ontario's court system: the Ontario Court of Justice, the Superior Court of Justice, and the Court of Appeal for Ontario.

The practice covers divorce, custody and access, spousal and child support, property division, separation agreements, and variations of existing court orders. Rather than treating court as the only option, Mark works through whichever process fits the file, negotiation, mediation, arbitration, or litigation. The practice also offers more than one way to work together: a full retainer where Mark manages the matter from start to finish, a limited scope or unbundled arrangement for clients who are otherwise representing themselves, a stand alone consultation with no obligation to retain further services, and a review of a separation agreement someone else has already drafted.

Frequently asked questions

Does DeGroot Law only handle family law?
Yes. Mark DeGroot practices exclusively in family law, covering divorce, custody and access, spousal and child support, property division, separation agreements, and variation of existing court orders.
I already have a separation agreement my ex's lawyer drafted. Can DeGroot Law just look it over?
Yes. Mark provides independent legal advice on agreements drafted by the other side's lawyer, to help make sure your rights are protected before you sign.
I want to represent myself in family court but need some help along the way, does DeGroot Law do that?
Yes. DeGroot Law offers a limited scope or unbundled retainer, where you decide which parts of the case Mark handles, from guidance to drafting documents to appearing in court, rather than taking on the full file.
Can I just book a consultation without committing to hire DeGroot Law?
Yes. Consultations are available with no obligation to retain further services, whether you want an opinion on your situation or specific questions answered.
Does DeGroot Law go to court, or only negotiate settlements?
Both. Mark uses whichever approach fits the case, negotiation, mediation, arbitration, or court proceedings, and has appeared at the Ontario Court of Justice, the Superior Court of Justice, and the Court of Appeal for Ontario.
How do I get in touch with DeGroot Law?
The practice can be reached by phone or email, with a Toronto address on file for service. Contact details are listed on the firm's contact page.
