About Cowan Law

Cowan Law is a small Toronto firm run by Jeffrey D. Cowan, practicing corporate and commercial law, real estate law, and wills and estates from three offices spread across the city, one downtown near Yorkville, one at Yonge and Lawrence, and one in Willowdale. Cowan is a Certified Specialist in Corporate/Commercial Law, a designation from the Law Society of Upper Canada, and the firm also offers notary and commissioner of oaths services.

Cowan holds two undergraduate degrees, one in economics from the University of Western Ontario and one in commerce from Concordia University, and a law degree from the University of British Columbia, where Cowan served as senior editor of the U.B.C. Law Review. Cowan later added an MBA from the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management and a Master of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School, specializing in business law.

The corporate and commercial work is aimed mostly at small and medium sized businesses, covering incorporations, business purchases and sales, and shareholder and partnership agreements, while the real estate practice handles both residential purchases, including condominiums, and larger commercial transactions. Cowan also wrote a weekly real estate column for Metro News, appearing on Thursdays, which the firm's site said was read by over one million people.

The neighbourhood

Cowan Law's three offices sit in three different Toronto neighbourhoods, and the mix roughly tracks the range of the real estate work. The downtown office, on Park Road near Bloor and Church, sits in one of the city's older, denser condo markets. The uptown office is in the Yonge and Lawrence building at 3080 Yonge Street, connected to Lawrence subway station in the Bedford Park neighbourhood, a longtime house and low rise area in midtown. The Willowdale office, on Sheppard Avenue East, sits in Willowdale East, one of the city's faster growing condo corridors. That spread covers the same condo to house range the real estate practice describes handling.
