About Bowlby Law

Bowlby Law is a small firm at 127 Portland Street in downtown Toronto, focused on real estate, wills and estates, and immigration law. Real estate work covers the purchase and sale of residential and commercial property, title transfers, refinancing, and incorporations, including work for Personal Real Estate Corporations, with video signings and mobile services offered alongside in person meetings. The wills and estates practice covers will drafting, powers of attorney, trusts, and long term estate planning, and the immigration practice handles work and study permits, Labour Market Impact Assessments, permanent residence applications, and spousal sponsorships. The firm also provides notary services and is recognized as a notary public by the Minister of the Attorney General of Ontario.

Bowlby Law was founded by Matthew Bowlby, who earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of King's College before completing a Juris Doctorate and Master of Laws at Bond University in 2019 and then working at J.W. Rea Law. The Bowlby name has a longer history in Ontario law: a great-grandfather, Charles William Reid Bowlby, served on the Ontario Court of Appeal, and a great-uncle, John Douglas Bowlby, practiced law in Hamilton, was elected Treasurer of the Law Society of Upper Canada, and was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ontario's High Court Trial Division.

The neighbourhood

Bowlby Law's office is on Portland Street in Toronto's King West area, once known as the city's Fashion District for the textile and garment factories built there in the early 1900s. Those factories and warehouses were gradually converted to other uses, and the area has seen extensive redevelopment since the late 1980s, with disused industrial and rail land turned into condominium, townhouse, and retail development, including a project just down the block at 123 Portland. That mix of century old industrial buildings and newer residential towers makes King West an active corner of the city for the kind of purchase, sale, and refinancing work the firm handles.
