Virtual appointmentsBlumbergs Professional Corporation is a Toronto law firm that works almost exclusively in non-profit and charity law. Henry Blumberg founded the firm in 1984, and it's grown to eight lawyers working out of an office in the Yonge Eglinton Centre at 2300 Yonge Street. Instead of treating charity clients as one file among many, the team spends its time on incorporation, CRA compliance, governance changes under Ontario's ONCA, mergers and affiliations, and cross border matters for Canadian charities operating abroad and foreign charities setting up in Canada.
Mark Blumberg, who holds a BA in political science from the University of Toronto, an LLB from the University of British Columbia and an LLM in tax law from Osgoode Hall Law School, edits the CanadianCharityLaw.ca blog, which has passed 3,600 posts over its first 18 years. The firm also built CharityData.ca, a free research tool covering Canadian registered charities, and SmartGiving.ca, which helps donors do due diligence before they give. Alongside case work, Blumbergs runs online courses and webinars for charity boards, staff and volunteers on subjects like CRA compliance and ONCA governance.

HourlyBlumbergs works out of the Yonge Eglinton Centre at 2300 Yonge Street, a pair of office towers on the northwest corner of Yonge and Eglinton in midtown Toronto. The complex connects underground to Eglinton subway station, which matters for a firm whose work regularly brings in charity boards, staff and volunteers from across the region for training sessions and in-person meetings rather than court appearances.
Because the practice is built around charities and non-profits rather than litigation, the firm's day to day contact points are the Canada Revenue Agency's Charities Directorate and the corporate registries under the Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act and the federal Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act, not the local courthouse.
