It was founded in 1890 by a group of Toronto industrialists who had studied factory towns in Rochester, New York, and it grew around manufacturers like Goodyear Tire and Campbell Soup before it was amalgamated into the Borough of Etobicoke in 1967 and eventually into the city of Toronto. The same street has its own retail history: Loblaws opened its first self-serve grocery store, the original Loblaw Groceteria, at 2879 Lake Shore Boulevard West in 1919. As the neighbourhood's factories closed through the late 20th century, New Toronto shifted toward housing and small local businesses, the kind of setting a small solo practice now serves.
