About AngeLAW

AngeLAW is a solo law practice in downtown Toronto, run by Angela Ogang, who is admitted to both the Law Society of Ontario and the Law Society of Kenya. The firm works with individual and business clients in Canada and abroad, focusing on business law, immigration law, and wills and estates, and Ogang practices in both English and French.

Ogang was born in Ivory Coast and studied in France before earning a Certificate in English Law from the London School of Economics, a Bachelor of Laws in English and French law from the University of Essex, a French Legal Studies Diploma from the University of Strasbourg, and a Master of Laws in corporate and commercial law from Queen Mary, University of London. Ogang moved to Montreal in 2005 to start a legal career in Canada, then began Canada's National Committee on Accreditation process in 2006 while working at a Toronto nonprofit, the path that eventually led to practicing law in Ontario.

Milestones & recognition

  • Ogang passed the Ontario bar exams in 2009 and passed the Kenya bar exams as well, then was called to the bar in Ontario in 2018.
  • Ogang led a group of fellow students in a lawsuit against Kenya's Council of Legal Education that overturned a rule blocking students who had studied outside Kenya from registering for the bar exams.

In the community

  • Ogang serves as communications officer for the Canadian Bar Association's Women Lawyers Forum and was featured in the CBA's Touchstones podcast mini series marking its 30th anniversary.
  • Ogang is a member of the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers.
  • An archived 2022 version of the firm's site described volunteer work with Pro Bono Ontario's Free Legal Advice Hotline and involvement with Ontario Bar Association sections including the Citizenship and Immigration Section, the Women Lawyers Forum, and the Young Lawyers Division.

The neighbourhood

AngeLAW's office is in the historic Dominion Bank building at 1 King Street West, right at Yonge and King in Toronto's financial district. The 12 storey building went up in 1914, designed by Darling and Pearson in the Beaux Arts style, and served as the Dominion Bank's head office until the bank merged into the Toronto-Dominion Bank in 1955. A 2006 restoration added a 51 storey hotel and residence tower above the original structure while keeping its grand banking hall and a vault whose 40 ton circular door was hauled up Yonge Street by 19 horses and 8 men. It's an unusual, history rich address for a small practice, and it puts the firm within easy reach of Toronto's courts, government offices, and the businesses and newcomers it works with.
