Agueci Calabretta is a small Toronto law firm built around debtor and creditor law. Joseph Agueci was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1982 and John Calabretta followed in 1983, the same year the two partnered to found the firm. Over four decades it has grown into a team of eight lawyers whose work centres on mortgage enforcement, commercial and residential real estate conveyancing, commercial litigation over secured and unsecured debt, and post judgment collections. The firm now acts as counsel to more than 25 financial institutions, including Schedule "A" banks, trust companies, credit unions, and mortgage and title insurance companies.
To manage that volume of lender work, the firm built its own MACE program, short for Mortgage Administration, Collections and Enforcement, to standardize how it handles a lender's power of sale files. Its docket also covers unsecured debt such as personal and small business loans, HELOC products, and credit cards, plus post judgment recovery once a court judgment is in hand. James Butson, who joined the firm in 1993, has taught the Bar Admission Course at the Law Society of Upper Canada since 1988, and Frances Agueci has lectured on Ontario's Substituted Decisions Act. The firm's single office sits in North American Centre at Yonge Street and Finch Avenue in Toronto.
Wheelchair accessibleThe firm's office is in North American Centre, an office complex on the northwest corner of Yonge Street and Finch Avenue in Toronto, with direct underground access to the Finch subway station. That kind of transit link suits how the firm actually works: its lawyers and clerks manage mortgage and debt files for financial institutions across Ontario rather than serving local walk-in clients, so an office that's easy to reach for staff, courts, and process servers across the region matters more than proximity to any one courthouse.
The firm lists a single Toronto office and a toll free line rather than branch locations, which fits a practice built around acting for lenders by phone, courier, and file transfer instead of face to face meetings near each client.
