About Matthews Law

Matthews Law is a small criminal and regulatory defence firm based in Thunder Bay, serving clients across Northwestern Ontario. Kevin Matthews leads the firm after training with senior criminal lawyers across Canada, several of whom are now judges, and working on both sides of the courtroom as a defence lawyer and a federal prosecutor. Matthews earned a law degree from the University of Manitoba in 2005 and was called to the bar in 2006, then practised in Ottawa, St. Catharines, Thunder Bay and across Northern Ontario. The firm's practice covers defence to criminal charges, regulatory offences under legislation such as the Highway Traffic Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, appeals, and professional discipline matters.

Two other lawyers practise alongside Matthews. Amy Grann, whose hometown is Thunder Bay, studied psychology at Lakehead University and science at Acadia University before graduating from the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law with first class standing and joining the firm in 2019. Sherry Abotossaway, also known by the name Nimkii Kwe, grew up on Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation on Manitoulin Island and studied Native Human Services at Laurentian University before training at Bora Laskin and being called to the bar in 2019; Abotossaway began as a sole practitioner running Abotossaway Law, which practises in association with Matthews Law.
