About Shukairy Law

Shukairy Law is a solo criminal defence practice in downtown Ottawa, run by lawyer Maya Shukairy. Shukairy holds a B.Sc. from McGill University and an LL.B. and J.D. from the Universite de Montreal. Before opening the practice, Shukairy worked as an Assistant Crown Attorney, prosecuting cases before moving to the defence side, which the firm says gives a comprehensive understanding of the criminal justice system and how police build a case. The practice handles bail hearings, impaired driving, domestic violence, drug offences, assault, fraud, firearms and weapons charges, and more serious matters up to murder charges, and it also takes on youth cases and Charter applications. From its Lisgar Street office near the Ottawa courthouse, the firm serves clients across Ottawa's east region, including Cornwall, L'Orignal, Pembroke, and Alexandria.

Shukairy offers services in English, French, and Arabic, and the practice accepts Legal Aid Ontario certificates alongside its own fee arrangements, recognizing that a criminal charge is already costly and stressful for most people facing one. Shukairy has argued before the Supreme Court of Canada, appearing as counsel for the intervener the Empowerment Council in R. v. Kahsai, a 2023 decision on the role of amicus curiae in criminal proceedings. Shukairy received a 2023 Wonder Award from Women in Canadian Criminal Defence, and the firm's YouTube channel won Best YouTube at the 2023 Canadian Law Blog Awards, known as the Clawbies. Shukairy belongs to the Law Society of Ontario, the Criminal Lawyers' Association, and the Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa.
