MBM Intellectual Property Law was established on November 14, 1994, originally based at 100 Sparks Street, a well known building in downtown Ottawa. The firm's headquarters moved in 2014 to newly renovated space on Slater Street, where it remains today. From that Ottawa base MBM opened offices in Vancouver in 1999 and Calgary in 2012, and it now also has offices in Toronto, Halifax and Montreal, six locations in total. The practice covers patents, trademarks, industrial designs, copyright, licensing, trade secrets, anti-counterfeiting and plant breeders' rights, along with IP litigation and dispute resolution.

By its own figures, MBM has about 60 staff, and 89% of its professionals hold a master's degree or PhD, with the same share coming from a science or engineering background, a reflection of how much IP work depends on understanding the technology behind it. The firm also reports that its people speak 20 languages between them, cover 40 areas of technology, file more than 1,000 patent and trademark applications a year, and have secured IP rights for clients in more than 100 countries. Women make up 70% of MBM's staff. The firm passed 1,000 clients in 2002 and reached 5,000 clients on November 6, 2024, the same year it marked its 30th anniversary.
