About Lighthouse Family Law LLP

Lighthouse Family Law LLP is a family law firm based in downtown Toronto, with its main office on University Avenue and additional consultation offices in Oakville, Mississauga, Richmond Hill and St. Catharines. Stephen Eaton and Jessica Polis met at Osgoode Hall Law School in 2008 and each spent about a decade practicing family law in the Greater Toronto Area on their own, Polis at an established family law firm and Eaton running an independent practice launched in 2013, before founding Lighthouse together in 2023. The firm has since grown to a team of 14, including eight lawyers along with law clerks and administrative staff.

The firm handles the full range of family law matters: separation and divorce, decision making and parenting time, child and spousal support, property division and equalization, trust claims, adoption, and marriage and cohabitation agreements. Every lawyer at the firm has training in mediation, and the firm also takes on litigation, including domestic violence matters that require restraining orders, plus limited scope retainers for clients who only need help with part of a case. Eaton pairs a law degree with an MBA from the Schulich School of Business and has argued cases at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Court of Appeal for Ontario. Staff at the firm speak Polish, Cantonese, Mandarin and Hebrew.

The neighbourhood

Lighthouse Family Law's main office is at 55 University Avenue in downtown Toronto. The firm also lists offices in Oakville, Mississauga, Richmond Hill and St. Catharines, giving clients across the western Greater Toronto Area and the Niagara region a location closer to home.

The firm's about-us page describes the Oakville, Mississauga, Richmond Hill and St. Catharines locations as consultation offices rather than separately staffed branches, so clients in those areas typically meet with a Lighthouse lawyer there by appointment rather than finding a full office team on site.

Frequently asked questions

What areas of family law does Lighthouse Family Law handle?
The firm handles separation, divorce, decision making and parenting time, grandparent access, child and spousal support, property division and equalization, trust claims, adoption, and marriage and cohabitation agreements.
Does Lighthouse Family Law only represent clients in court, or can it help me settle without litigation?
The firm works through lawyer assisted negotiation and mediation first where that's realistic. All of its lawyers have mediation training. It also takes on litigation, including domestic violence matters where a restraining order is needed, when negotiation isn't an option.
Where are Lighthouse Family Law's offices?
The main office is on University Avenue in downtown Toronto. The firm also has consultation offices in Oakville, Mississauga, Richmond Hill and St. Catharines for clients in those areas.
How long has Lighthouse Family Law been practicing family law in the GTA?
The firm itself was founded in 2023, but its founders, Stephen Eaton and Jessica Polis, had each already practiced family law in the Greater Toronto Area for about a decade before that.
Are there lawyers or staff at the firm who speak languages other than English?
Yes. Lawyers and support staff at the firm speak Polish, Cantonese, Mandarin and Hebrew.
Can Lighthouse Family Law just help with one part of my case instead of handling the whole thing?
Yes. The firm offers limited scope retainers for clients who need help with something specific, like reviewing disclosure, giving strategic advice, or appearing at a particular court date, rather than full representation.
