Black & Wood Law Office is a small general practice in the village of Rockwood, Ontario, the main community in Guelph/Eramosa Township in Wellington County. Douglas Black founded the practice in 1989. Christopher Wood joined in 2016, and the two ran it together as Black and Wood LLP until Douglas Black retired at the end of 2017. Since then the firm has continued as Black & Wood Law Office, with a lawyer who's also a notary public and a small team of law clerks.
The office keeps its focus on the everyday legal needs of local families and businesses. Real estate is a core area, covering the purchase, sale, and refinancing of homes, condos, and cottages, along with commercial property, title transfers, and survivorship applications. The firm also drafts wills and powers of attorney, assists executors with estate administration, and handles corporate and commercial matters such as incorporations, annual minutes, and share transactions. Notarial work rounds out the list, from commissioner-for-oaths services to travel consent letters and certified copies. The office keeps regular weekday hours, Monday to Friday from nine to five.
Wheelchair accessibleRockwood grew up along the Eramosa River, which runs right through the middle of the village and once powered the mills that first drew settlers here in the 1820s. The settlement was originally called Brotherstown before it took the name Rockwood. Its most familiar landmark today is the Rockwood Conservation Area, a stretch of both banks of the river known for its glacial bluffs, a network of a dozen caves, more than two hundred potholes, and the stone ruins of the Rockwood Woolen Mill. The area opened to the public in 1963 and now draws more than sixty-five thousand visitors a year.
The law office sits on Main Street North, part of the Highway 7 route that runs through the centre of the village and links Rockwood to Guelph in one direction and Acton in the other. For a practice built around real estate, estates, and small business, that main-street address puts it close to the homeowners, cottage owners, and family-run businesses it serves across Guelph/Eramosa Township.
