About MLA Law

MLA Law is the working name of Moutsatsos Laakso Alexander LLP, a law firm based in downtown Sudbury with a second office in Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island. The firm takes its name from founding partners Steve Moutsatsos, Linda Laakso, and Sheena Alexander, who started the practice together after years working at a larger regional law firm. Since then MLA Law has grown to more than 20 lawyers and support staff, with nine lawyers currently on the team. Steve Moutsatsos and Linda Laakso didn't start their careers in Northern Ontario: Moutsatsos practiced at a national law firm on Bay Street in Toronto, and Laakso also practiced in Toronto, before both moved to Sudbury.

The firm's work centers on four areas: business and corporate law, mining and natural resource law, estate planning, and real estate. Its mining practice advises clients ranging from junior exploration companies to larger producers on mineral title, land acquisitions, and impact benefit agreements with First Nations, work that draws on Sudbury's long history as a center for the mining industry and its supply and service sector. On the estate side, the firm handles wills, family trusts, powers of attorney, guardianship applications, and estate administration and litigation. Counsel Brian Montgomery joined MLA Law after serving as a partner and head of the corporate and commercial group at Weaver, Simmons LLP in Sudbury.
