He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from St. Francis Xavier University in 1975 and a law degree from Dalhousie University in 1979. He practiced for five years in Gander, Newfoundland, before returning to Cape Breton in 1984 and becoming a partner of what became Evans, MacIsaac, MacMillan. His practice focuses on criminal and family law and civil litigation, with substantial courtroom work. He served as president of the Strait Area Barristers' Society and has spent over three decades with the Strait Area Minor Baseball Association as umpire, coach, and association president, earning recognition as Port Hawkesbury's Provincial Volunteer in 2000.
