About Steve

Steve graduated from the University of New Brunswick law school in 2011 and immediately began his articles with a respected Edmonton criminal law firm, where he stayed as an associate and then partner until 2021, when he left to found Steve Smith Law. He was called to the Alberta Bar in 2012. He is known for aggressively challenging police investigations and regularly succeeds in having evidence excluded for breaches of clients' Charter rights, while keeping in mind that it is the Crown's burden to prove guilt. He proceeds to trial, including before a jury where appropriate, in almost all cases, and has argued appeals in the Alberta Court of King's Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada. He won the Criminal Trial Lawyers Association's Bruce Gunn Junior Barrister Award in 2015 and has presented for the Legal Education Society of Alberta, the Criminal Trial Lawyers Association, the Centre for Public Legal Education Alberta, several sections of the Canadian Bar Association, and the University of Alberta law school, where he was formerly a sessional instructor co-coaching the trial moot team.
