About Shantona

Shantona Chaudhury is a partner whose litigation practice spans civil and commercial disputes, class actions, professional liability and discipline matters, judicial reviews, constitutional law, and national security law. She has argued more than 40 appeals in courts including the Supreme Court of Canada, the Ontario Court of Appeal, the Divisional Court, and the Federal Court of Appeal. Shantona served as Lead Commission Counsel for two major federal inquiries: the Public Order Emergency Commission examining the government's use of the Emergencies Act in 2022-2023, and the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference in 2023-2025. She is bilingual and called to the bar in both Ontario and Quebec, and she holds a B.C.L. from the University of Oxford, a combined B.C.L./LL.B. from McGill University, and a master's and bachelor's degree in French from Queen's University. Earlier in her career she clerked for Justice Ian Binnie of the Supreme Court of Canada, trained as a pupil barrister in London as a Middle Temple Fox Scholar, and interned at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Shantona received the Toronto Lawyers' Association's Honsberger Award in 2025 and the Advocates' Society's Douglas K. Laidlaw Award for Excellence in Advocacy in 2023, and she co-directs the Supreme Court Advocacy Institute.
