About Robert

Robert Smithson is a labour and employment lawyer who focuses exclusively on legal problems that arise in the workplace, representing and advising employers across British Columbia. He earned a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie Law School in 1994 and began his career in 1995 as in-house counsel for a major union, later working as a human resources and industrial relations executive in private industry and as an associate at Schiller Coutts Weiler & Gibson in Vancouver. He then practised as an associate and partner at Pushor Mitchell in Kelowna before opening Smithson Employment Law Corporation in January 2011. He has represented clients before the BC courts and statutory tribunals, including the Employment Standards Branch, the Labour Relations Board, the Human Rights Tribunal, and the Canada Industrial Relations Board, and in various arbitration settings. Since 2019 he has been a part-time professor at Okanagan College, teaching employment and labour law within the Business Faculty.
