About Matt

Matt Maurer is a partner in Torkin Manes' Litigation & Dispute Resolution Group and chairs the firm's Cannabis and Franchise Law Groups. With nearly 20 years of experience, he acts as a trial and appellate advocate for commercial disputes, appearing before courts in Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta as well as in domestic and international arbitrations. He also counsels cannabis industry participants, including licence holders, ancillary service providers, and entrepreneurs entering the Canadian market, and has advised international celebrities on their dealings with Canadian cannabis companies. On the franchise side, Matt represents both franchisors and franchisees, helping prepare disclosure documents and handling franchise litigation. He earned a mediation accreditation from Harvard and maintains a practice as a neutral in commercial disputes. Matt holds an LLB from Queen's University and was called to the Ontario bar in 2007.
