About Lionel
Lionel Chartrand is a criminal defence lawyer practicing in Edmonton with a particular focus on Aboriginal rights and constitutional law. Raised in St. Laurent, Manitoba, he earned his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law degrees from the University of Manitoba and was called to the Manitoba bar in June 1985. He practiced in Northern Manitoba and Winnipeg before moving to Alberta in 2008, where he worked as a Crown Prosecutor for Alberta Justice, and he reopened Chartrand Law Office in Edmonton in August 2012. Chartrand has argued constitutional and Aboriginal rights cases before the Supreme Court of Canada on four occasions and has appeared before the Court of Queen's Bench and Courts of Appeal in both Manitoba and Alberta. In 2023 he was appointed a Provincial Court Judge but declined the position to continue practicing criminal defence.
