About Laura
Laura Setzer has practised immigration and refugee law exclusively since 1993 and founded Setzer Immigration Law in Ottawa in 2005. She earned her LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1991 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1993, later qualifying as a solicitor in the United Kingdom in 1994 and practising immigration and refugee law there for five years before returning to Canada. She appears regularly before the Immigration and Refugee Board and the Federal Court, representing clients at detention reviews, refugee hearings, appeals, and judicial review applications, as well as sponsorship appeals and humanitarian and compassionate applications. Laura is able to accept Legal Aid certificates for general and appellate work and is a member of the Legal Aid Ontario Area Committee, the Refugee Lawyers Association, and the Law Society of Upper Canada. She also draws on earlier experience working in women's shelters in her work with women facing immigration and refugee issues, and is committed to assisting other vulnerable groups, including people with mental health problems.
