Jan A. Fishman is a life and disability insurance lawyer at Fishman Lawyers who represents claimants against insurers, having previously worked as an insurance lawyer for the industry since 1992. From 1995 to 2002 he was retained by several insurers, and from 2002 to 2012 he served as in-house counsel for Manufacturers Life Insurance Company (Manulife), defending lawsuits brought against its divisions and subsidiaries. In 2012 he founded Fishman Lawyers to represent people who have been denied life, disability, and critical illness insurance benefits, and has recovered millions of dollars in wrongfully denied claims. In 2015 Manulife unsuccessfully sought a British Columbia Supreme Court order to prohibit Fishman from acting against it based on his prior in-house knowledge of its practices, and a related complaint it filed with the Canadian Internet Registration Authority in 2016 was also dismissed. Fishman received his B.A. from Simon Fraser University and his law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, was awarded the Governor General's Silver Medal in 1983, and was called to the British Columbia bar on August 28, 1992. He is a twice elected member of the Provincial Council of the Canadian Bar Association, a former President of the Abbotsford Bar Association, and has served on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Civil Jury Instructions publication since 2016.
