About James

James Singer is a Toronto-area family lawyer with more than 30 years of courtroom experience, focused on child-related outcomes and complex financial issues in family law matters, including cases involving common-law cohabitation. He has argued numerous cases before the Ontario Court of Appeal, including decisions on the effect of a Michigan divorce on Ontario child support, the sustaining and termination of spousal support, and parenting rights disputes involving allegations about a parent's mental health. He has also handled disputes over choice of school, relocation of children, beneficial ownership of rental property, security for support, non-dissipation orders, and exclusive possession of the matrimonial home, with several of his cases becoming precedents relied on in later decisions. Earlier in his career, before focusing solely on family law, he successfully argued an Ontario Court of Appeal case against the City of Toronto establishing that the Municipal Act's notice requirement should be read down against a slip-and-fall plaintiff. He practices as a sole practitioner with the assistance of long-time law clerk Maria Kirshenblatt.
