About James
The Hon. James J. Keaney is a partner at Hansell McLaughlin, having previously served as a judge of the Ontario Court of Justice. He was called to the bar in 1977 after graduating from Cornell University and attending law school at the University of Ottawa, and later completed a mediation course at Harvard. Before his judicial appointment in 2003, Jim was a partner at the litigation boutique Hughes, Amys. As a judge, he dealt with numerous criminal proceedings such as pre-trial resolution conferences, trial work, appeals under the Provincial Offences Act, and preliminary inquiries involving complicated cases, retiring from the bench in 2021. Earlier in his career he worked on civil trials, arbitrations, mediations, and appeals, chaired the Insurance Law section of the Canadian Bar Association of Ontario, and served as the editor for the Canadian Journal of Insurance Law publication.
