What does a family lawyer do?
Family lawyers guide people through separation, divorce, parenting arrangements, child and spousal support, and dividing property. Some of it is contentious and ends up in court. A lot of it doesn't.
When children are involved, decisions turn on their best interests, and parenting time and decision-making responsibility are handled separately from support.
Fit counts as much as credentials here. Ask whether the lawyer leans toward settlement or litigation, how they bill, and whether they're trained in mediation or collaborative practice if that's the route you want. You can confirm any lawyer's standing with the law society in your province before you retain them.
