Dale arrived in Waterloo in 1976 to study environmental studies, then in 1981 followed a newly found interest in social change into a master's in political science. Early in that graduate work, Dale asked other members of a small food co-op whether any of them might want to organize a housing co-operative. Within 12 months Dale was the first employee of Waterloo-Wellington Non-Profit Homes, a co-op housing resource group, and 15 months after that the first families moved into Beaver Creek Housing Co-operative. Dale was Waterloo-Wellington's only managing director.
Across its years of operation, the organization developed 1520 affordable housing units in 27 multiple residential projects, valued at approximately $180 million, while its property management portfolio grew to 800 units in 13 projects. Dale entered law school at the University of Western Ontario in September 2008.
In many respects, the law practice is a natural extension of that earlier working life. A 25-year career in enterprise and not-for-profit management before law school gave Dale knowledge of, and experience with, the challenges non-profits and charities face every day.

Wills and estate planning
A basic will is a fixed $300, and a basic will with 2 powers of attorney is a fixed $425. Once you've retained Holland Law, the first step is an interview where you explain your wishes, and by the end of it you'll be told whether a basic will can accommodate them.
Corporations, partnerships and franchise buyers
Recurring corporate work, such as issuing shares and maintaining or remediating corporate records, is billed at administrative rates. Holland Law drafts and amends partnership agreements and can register a partnership under the Business Name Act and the Limited Partnerships Act when that's needed. If you're thinking about buying a franchise, Dale can help you go through the franchisor's disclosure document, the franchise agreement and the purchase documentation to judge whether it's the right opportunity for you.
Negotiation first, then Small Claims Court
Dale's natural preference in a dispute is a negotiated or mediated resolution, and the commitment is to work hard for one on a client's behalf. Holland Law can also act for plaintiffs and defendants in Small Claims Court, and where needed, including when a claim is above that court's maximum, it helps clients retain lawyers whose practices are better suited to the matter.
Advice for employers
For employers, clear agreements with employees before each employment relationship starts are a key ingredient of human resources success, and when a workplace conflict comes up, Dale's advice is to get in touch early. Affidavits and notarizations
As a lawyer, Dale is able to take affidavits, and can also administer oaths, affirmations and declarations. When that's the only service a client needs, payment is due on completion; when it's part of other work, there's no charge. Non-profits also pay nothing when their documents are already prepared and ready to be sworn or notarized.

Not-for-profit clients can get informal governance audits, education and coaching on governance, legal and ethical questions for both boards and staff, and help with the transition to the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act and the Ontario Not-for-profit Corporations Act. Every matter starts with Dale making sure the client's goals are fully understood from the outset. Will drafting and related services, along with some corporate services, can be done for a fixed fee. If you'd like to handle parts of a matter yourself, for financial or other reasons, Dale is fully prepared to help you do it strategically, as long as that's practical and within Law Society rules.
Dale's ongoing goal is to provide 15 percent of the practice's legal services each year without charge. Holland Law commits to replying to every client communication within 24 hours, weekends and holidays excepted, and offers home visits to clients with mobility limitations.
