About Hanmer Law
Hanmer Law is a small business law practice in Uptown Waterloo, Ontario. Greg Hanmer started it in early 2014 after a long career at larger firms. Before going independent, the founder was a partner at a Kitchener-Waterloo firm that grew through two mergers into a national Canadian firm, and stayed on as a partner there until the end of 2013. The route into law was a second act. Study at York University's Schulich School of Business (a BBA and an MBA) and a stretch in commercial banking came first, followed by a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School.
The practice splits between two areas. On the business side it works as outside general counsel to entrepreneurs, startups, and small to medium-sized companies, many of them in technology, on incorporations, shareholder agreements, financing, and the sale or purchase of a business. The other half is estate planning and elder law, covering wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and consent and capacity matters. The firm runs a deliberately lean model. It works out of a shared office in Uptown Waterloo with remote paralegals, cloud-based systems, and virtual meetings, and it brings in outside specialists in tax, securities, intellectual property, and employment law when a file calls for it.
