About SafaLaw

SafaLaw is a criminal defence firm in downtown Kitchener, run by Sean Safa, a barrister and solicitor with more than two decades of experience. The practice is limited to criminal and quasi-criminal matters, defending charges under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and the Highway Traffic Act. That covers a wide span: impaired driving and other driving offences, assault and domestic charges, sexual assault, theft and fraud, firearm and drug charges, and youth matters.

The firm handles a case from the first phone call through trial and appeal, including advice before or after an arrest, bail and peace bond hearings, pre-trial negotiations, and preliminary hearings. When a defence calls for it, Sean Safa brings in private investigators, toxicologists, drug specialists, psychologists, counsellors, and paralegals. Clients come from across Southwestern Ontario, and the firm can meet by Zoom, Skype, or phone as well as in person. It's reachable 24 hours a day, which matters when an arrest happens at night or on a weekend.

Who handles what

The neighbourhood

SafaLaw sits on Frederick Street in downtown Kitchener, a short walk up the same street from the Waterloo Region courthouse at 85 Frederick. For a practice that's entirely criminal defence, that's practical rather than incidental: bail hearings, set dates, and trials all happen a few blocks from the desk. The office keeps free parking for clients, and it regularly takes on files that people ask to move to the Waterloo courthouse from other parts of the province.

Frequently asked questions

I've been charged with impaired driving in Kitchener. Can SafaLaw help?
Yes. Impaired driving and other driving offences are a core part of the practice, including over 80, care and control, dangerous or careless driving, stunt driving, and refusing to provide a breath sample.
Does the firm handle anything other than criminal cases?
No. SafaLaw limits its work to criminal and quasi-criminal matters under the Criminal Code, the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and the Highway Traffic Act.
What if I'm arrested at night or on a weekend?
The firm is reachable 24 hours a day and can give advice before or after an arrest and while a client is in police custody, so you don't have to wait for regular office hours to get help.
Can I meet without coming in to the office?
Yes. Consultations can be done by Zoom, Skype, or phone, and the initial one-hour consultation is offered once you have your Crown disclosure. If you come in person, free parking is available at the office.
I was charged somewhere else in Ontario. Can my case be handled in Kitchener?
The firm assists clients who want to transfer charges from another jurisdiction to the Waterloo Regional Courthouse, and it takes selected cases elsewhere in and outside Ontario.
I've been charged with shoplifting. Will it stay on my record even if the charge is dropped?
This is something SafaLaw addresses directly. Even when a theft under $5,000 charge is withdrawn, it can leave a vulnerable sector check record that shows up on some employment background checks and can affect travel to the United States. The firm works with the Crown to resolve these cases in a way that limits that fallout.
