McSevney Chaves LLP is a two-lawyer firm in Cambridge, Ontario, set up as a limited liability partnership by Gord McSevney and Cindy Chaves. It works out of Unit 101 at 498 Eagle Street North, in the Preston part of the city, and serves clients across the Region of Waterloo and the surrounding area. The day-to-day work sits in four connected areas: real estate, wills and estates, corporate, and family law. On the real estate side that means residential purchases and sales along with some commercial matters like leases and bank or private financing. The estates practice covers wills, codicils, powers of attorney, probate applications, and trusts, and the firm lists a flat fee for basic wills.
Both partners have long ties to the area. Gord McSevney earned an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the University of Waterloo before graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School and being called to the bar in 1988, and has lived in Cambridge since 1992. Cindy Chaves was born and raised in Cambridge, took an honours BA in criminology at the University of Windsor, and was called to the bar in 2002; a Level II Collaborative Law Practitioner designation followed in 2010. The office is wheelchair accessible through a ramp at the front of Unit 101, and the firm prefers that clients call rather than email.

Flat feeThe firm's office is a leased unit inside one of Preston's oldest industrial buildings, the former George Pattinson Woollen Mill at 498 Eagle Street North. The complex began as a linen mill put up during the American Civil War, switched to wool production in 1870 under James Crombie, and ran as a working mill until 1958, turning out tweeds, cheviots, overcoatings, and mackinaws along the way. The roughly 200,000 square foot property has since been repurposed as a commercial rental building, and McSevney Chaves is one of the tenants that keep it in use. That setting suits a firm whose steady work is real estate and estates in an established corner of Cambridge, where houses and small commercial buildings tend to have long histories of their own.
