About Lumen LLP

Lumen LLP is a small corporate and commercial law firm on Bloor Street West in Toronto's Yorkville neighbourhood. David Yun and Christine Fard co-founded the firm to serve small and medium sized businesses, and its work covers the transactions that keep a company running: incorporation and governance, acquisitions and divestitures, commercial contracts, corporate reorganizations, financing, and trademark and copyright registration. Every corporate or restructuring file is reviewed with tax planning in mind, an approach Yun traces back to a placement at the Tax Division of the federal Department of Justice while still a law student.

Yun completed a JD with high honours at Michigan State University College of Law on an academic scholarship. Fard is admitted to the Ontario Bar and the New York State Bar and earned an LLB with First Class Honours (Summa Cum Laude) from the London School of Economics, receiving the Sweet and Maxwell Prize for outstanding performance and the Blackstone Chambers Prize for public law along the way. Before co-founding Lumen, Fard worked across corporate, commercial, tax, and intellectual property law. Yun is fluent in English and Korean, and Fard is fluent in English and Filipino, and conversant in Spanish and French.

The neighbourhood

Lumen LLP's office sits on Bloor Street West at the northeast corner of Bellair Street, right in the stretch of Yorkville known as the Mink Mile. It is a well known concentration of luxury retail, with office towers that put storefronts on the ground floor and boutiques and galleries filling the side streets just north. That mix of small, owner-run retailers and corporate office space is a fitting backdrop for a firm built around advising small and medium sized businesses rather than large public companies.

Yorkville grew out of a Victorian residential suburb annexed by Toronto in the 1880s. It only became a commercial district after subway construction in the 1960s and 70s let the city rezone for greater density, and many of the homes along Yorkville and Cumberland were converted into shops. The neighbourhood's transformation from a village of houses into a business address is a piece of local history the firm's own street now reflects.
