About Ertl Lawyers

Ertl Lawyers is a small employment and disability law firm founded in Toronto in 2009 by David Ertl. The firm is based at 18 King Street East in Toronto's financial district and also keeps an office in Halifax, which extends its employment law practice into Nova Scotia while its disability law work reaches clients across Canada. Before starting the firm, Ertl worked at a national law firm's Vancouver and Toronto offices, practicing employment law along with injury and disability matters, professional regulation and discipline, and criminal and quasi-criminal defense. Ertl earned a law degree from the University of Western Ontario.

The firm represents employees in severance negotiations and wrongful and constructive dismissal claims, and helps people whose long-term disability claims have been denied. On the employer side, it advises on hiring and dismissal, workplace policies, HR compliance, and workplace investigations. Ertl is a certified workplace investigator and has appeared before the courts of Ontario and British Columbia, the Tax Court of Canada, human rights tribunals in both provinces, and the Ontario Labour Relations Board. Ertl has also taught as an adjunct professor, covering employment law, tribunal practice and procedure, and trial advocacy, and has written about employment and administrative law topics for a national encyclopedic law digest.
