Bygrave Law is a solo criminal defence practice run by Daisy Bygrave, with an office on Weston Road in Toronto's Weston neighbourhood. Bygrave earned a law degree from Harvard Law School in 2000. Before law school, a full athletic scholarship brought Bygrave to Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, where four years on the track and field team included All American honours on the 4x400 metre relay.
After graduating, Bygrave worked in the chambers of a federal district judge in Detroit and at a corporate litigation firm in Washington, D.C., then joined the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia from October 2002 to November 2007, representing clients in cases ranging from murder to misdemeanours. From there, Bygrave moved to the Federal Public Defender's office for the Central District of California in Los Angeles, working in both the trial and appellate divisions on cases involving the death penalty and life sentences.
A native of Toronto, Bygrave eventually returned to the city to practice criminal defence, now handling matters that include homicides, complex fraud, domestic assault, and weapons offences. The firm is on Legal Aid Ontario's roster and is approved to take on Extremely Serious Matters certificates as well as Gladue matters, which call for special consideration of an Indigenous accused's background at bail and sentencing.
The office sits on Weston Road in Toronto's Weston neighbourhood, a former town on the Humber River that was named in 1815, incorporated as a village in 1881, became a town in 1914, and was absorbed first into the Borough of York in 1967 and then into Toronto in 1998. Weston Road is still the area's commercial spine, lined with early 20th century buildings, and the bicycle emblems on its streetlights nod to a manufacturing past that included a CCM bicycle factory nearby on Lawrence Avenue.
The address is a few blocks from Weston GO and UP Express station on Weston Road near Lawrence Avenue West, giving clients from across the city and the wider region a direct transit link to a criminal defence practice where court dates and consultations often mean repeat visits.
