About Butkowsky Immigration Law

Butkowsky Immigration Law is a small immigration and refugee law practice based at 41 Madison Avenue in Toronto's Annex neighbourhood. Larry Butkowsky founded the practice and has been in practice since 1992, focusing exclusively on immigration and refugee law to keep pace with changes in immigration and citizenship policy. Butkowsky has described being the child of immigrants and says that background shapes an understanding of the difficulties of moving to a new country, alone or with family. Butkowsky holds a 1987 Bachelor of Arts in communication studies from Concordia University.

The firm handles family sponsorship applications for spouses, partners, dependent children, parents and grandparents, refugee protection claims before the Refugee Protection Division, appeals of refused sponsorships and deportation orders before the Immigration Appeal Division, visitor, study and work permit applications, humanitarian and compassionate applications, and citizenship applications. Legal assistant and office manager Sadia Nasir has worked at the firm since 2016 and speaks four languages, and the firm also works with a network of interpreters and translators so it can serve clients in multiple languages. In April 2023, Butkowsky was interviewed by Concordia University Magazine about Canada's refugee and asylum system, describing it as generally functional but slow for people applying for refugee status.
