About East City Legal

East City Legal is a family law and mediation practice in Peterborough, Ontario, run by owner and lawyer Rod Grierson together with associate lawyer Aaron Huizinga. Both hold a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Osgoode Hall Law School, though they came to law by different routes. Grierson trained first as a civil engineering technologist and studied international development before law school, while Huizinga worked as a mechanical designer and moved into law after self-representing in a family court case and winning equal shared parenting of the children. The firm handles separation and divorce, parenting and support matters, cohabitation and marriage agreements, and property division, along with wills and powers of attorney.

Grierson is trained in both Collaborative Practice and mediation and holds a mediation certificate from Riverdale Mediation. Rather than defaulting to litigation, East City Legal offers mediation and collaborative family law as ways to settle a separation outside of court, alongside negotiation, limited scope court assistance for people representing themselves, and independent legal advice on agreements someone else drafted. Grierson was born and raised in Peterborough and lived in London, Nanaimo, Toronto, and Barrie before returning to Peterborough, where Grierson now owns the practice.
