Helsons LLP is a general practice law firm based in Georgetown, Ontario, with a longstanding office in nearby Acton. The firm traces its Halton Hills roots back to 1885 and is now the oldest and largest law firm in the area. Local business history records that the roots of today's practice go back further, to 1914, when a lawyer named Andy Dale began practicing in Georgetown, and that the practice marked its 100th anniversary in 2014. Over the decades the firm's name grew to reflect its partners, and it's still known formally as Helson Kogon Ashbee Schaljo and Associates LLP, a name that includes two of today's partners.
Partner David Ashbee has practiced at the firm since 1983, and Mark Rush joined in 1988 after six years of practice in Brampton. Steven Kogon, a graduate of Bond University in Australia, has been with the firm since 2011. Together with their associates, they cover real estate, family law, wills and estate planning, corporate and commercial law, and civil litigation, along with smaller matters in municipal and administrative law. The real estate team is linked electronically to every Land Titles office in the province, so it can complete a closing anywhere in Ontario, and the firm's wills vault, built to be fire and water resistant, holds more than 7,000 documents.
Wheelchair accessibleHelsons' Georgetown office sits at 132 Mill Street, in a building local history places within the town's old O'Neil block. The building appears on an 1895 map of downtown Georgetown, was largely rebuilt after a fire went through the block in 1920, and by the 1930s had spent time as a car garage before later becoming law offices, the kind of building that has quietly changed hands and uses for well over a century.
The Acton office, at 35 Mill Street East, sits in a town that grew up around an actual grist mill and the mill pond the town's founders dammed when they settled the area in 1825. Acton later adopted the nickname Leathertown, home to the Beardmore Tanning Company, which at one point proclaimed itself the largest tannery in the British Empire, until it closed in 1986.
