After working in Toronto at first, the founder relocated to Guelph and opened the practice there in 1996.
Since January 2024 the practice has been part of SorbaraLAW, working from that firm's Guelph office on Woolwich Street. Cheryl Stelzer made the move to keep serving former clients and to take on new ones, and family law clients now get guidance on how to approach their matter with SorbaraLAW's experienced staff behind them.
History
The practice opened in September 1996 as Smith & Stelzer, which Cheryl Stelzer started with Marnie Smith. Both belonged to a group of classmates who'd met as mature students at Osgoode and got through law school, articling and the bar exams together. On November 28, 1996, the Guelph Mercury's business section marked the opening with an announcement headed "New Team in Town."
From the summer of 2011 the office was at 363 Woolwich Street, in a building from the late 1800s whose interior was kept true to its period. Michelle Rozanski joined in 2017 as a summer student while still at McGill, later articled with Cheryl Stelzer and was called to the bar in 2022. In December 2023 Cheryl Stelzer closed the private practice that had run as Stelzer Law Office and joined SorbaraLAW, and Michelle Rozanski made the same move and now practises in SorbaraLAW's family law group.
