Waterloo Avenue dates back to Guelph's 1827 town survey, when John Galt chose to build it as Market Street, a decision counted among the key ones of the town's early planning. The road started as a wide gap cut through old-growth forest, 132 feet across, and reached seven miles west toward the county of Waterloo. By 1876 its full length, from Gordon Street to the town limit at Silvercreek Road, had taken the Waterloo Avenue name. Quarrying left its mark here too: 25 stone buildings along the avenue are built of quarried Lockport Dolomite, and No. 1, a two-storey brick house, has stood on the north side since 1844.
