The neighbourhood
Fergus sits on the Grand River. Adam Ferguson founded it in 1833, buying 7,000 acres with fellow lawyer James Webster and setting about developing the land.
The firm's address, 101 St. Andrew Street West, is the Marshall Block, a late 19th-century commercial building named for Samuel Marshall. It's a Second Empire design with a mansard roof, a stone facade and a distinctive octagonal tower over the corner of St. Andrew Street West and St. David Street North. The Imperial Bank of Canada ran its business from the main floor for just over 50 years, and the Wilson, Jack and Grant law firm followed it there for 36 years. The bank's original vault is still on the main floor. In November 2024 the Township of Centre Wellington gave notice that it intends to designate the property under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act.
