About Buchanan Law

Buchanan Law is a solo criminal and regulatory defence practice run by Jim Buchanan from an office on Talbot Street in St. Thomas, Ontario, serving London, St. Thomas, Sarnia, Woodstock and the surrounding area. Buchanan grew up in Southern Ontario and spent years in provincial enforcement before becoming a lawyer, first as an Officer with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources in Algonquin Provincial Park, then as an MTO Transportation Enforcement Officer inspecting commercial vehicles out of the Putnam facility on Highway 401 east of London and later out of Thunder Bay. Buchanan was later appointed a Provincial Training Instructor with the MTO's Road User Safety Division, developing the curriculum used to train new officer recruits across Ontario.

In 2020, Buchanan left the MTO to study at the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law in Thunder Bay, completed a law practice placement at a criminal defence firm, and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 2023. Buchanan continued defending criminal and regulatory offences in Thunder Bay before relocating to St. Thomas to open Buchanan Law. The firm doesn't limit its regulatory work to trucking tickets. Its docket runs from Highway Traffic Act and CVOR charges to Liquor Licence, Occupational Health and Safety, Cannabis Control, municipal by-law, and hunting and fishing offences, and it also offers notary and commissioning services.
