About Thomas

Thomas F. Balka is a criminal trial lawyer who graduated from the University of Manitoba before earning his law degree from Queen's University in 1986. For close to 40 years he has practised exclusively in criminal defence and appeals, arguing cases involving sexual assault, impaired driving, and drug offences before the Ontario Court of Appeal, and trying jury cases in cities across Ontario including Oshawa, Kingston, London, and Toronto. He has defended dozens of homicide cases, from first and second degree murder to manslaughter, securing acquittals and reduced or withdrawn charges. He is also qualified to practise in Nunavut and has argued before the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit. Thomas has lectured on criminal law topics for many years and was a longtime director of the Criminal Lawyers Association, a member since 1989.
