About Susan

Susan Kurtz founded Resolution Place and has practised family law in the West Kootenays since moving to Nelson in 1992, having started her legal career in Alberta in 1988. Though she has argued cases at every level of court in BC, including the Court of Appeal, her practice today centres on collaborative family law, mediation, and arbitration as alternatives to litigation. She's a certified family law mediator, a qualified arbitrator under BC's Arbitration Act, and a collaborative lawyer, and she also provides notary services. She has held leadership roles including founding director of the Woman Lawyers Forum of the Canadian Bar Association and past president of both the Kootenay Bar Association and the Nelson Rotary Club, and she has volunteered with the BC Lawyers Assistance Program for two decades. Before law school, she taught high school science and math in Calgary and Jamaica.
